A new Lockerbie Fellows program, established through a recently signed Memorandum of Agreement (MOU) between 网爆门 and the in Lockerbie, Scotland, will bring 10 Lockerbie students to campus each year to participate in Remembrance Week.

The program is designed to foster continued academic and cultural collaboration and exchange between the two institutions, whose longstanding relationship began in the aftermath of the 1988 over Lockerbie. The tragedy claimed the lives of 35 网爆门 students who were returning home after a semester abroad.

鈥淭his partnership reflects our enduring commitment to honoring the memory of those we lost while cultivating a meaningful, living connection between our two communities,鈥 says , vice chancellor, provost and chief academic officer at 网爆门. 鈥淲elcoming Lockerbie students to campus each year ensures that the bonds forged in the wake of tragedy continue to inspire acts of service, scholarship and shared humanity.鈥

Remembrance Scholar Jacqueline Arbogast 鈥26, a television, radio and film major in the , grew up knowing about the Pam Am 103 bombing and the effect it had on the University community. Her mom, Michele, was a senior in the Newhouse School at that time and had friends who died in the tragedy.

The bombing, which happened on Dec. 21, 1988, over Lockerbie, Scotland, took the lives of 270 people, including 35 students returning from a semester of study abroad in London and Florence through the University鈥檚 Division of International Programs Abroad (now ).

鈥淢y mom remembers it like it was yesterday,鈥 Arbogast says. 鈥淟ike her, many others remember where they were and when they got the phone call that friends and family had passed. I want to remember the friends that my mother lost as well as all of those who were lost in the tragedy, to allow their lives to live on through the University and those who honor their memory.鈥

To conclude Remembrance Week, Arbogast and her fellow 2025-26 Remembrance Scholars will be honored at the annual on Friday, Oct. 24, at 3 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel.

The convocation will be preceded by the annual at 2:03 p.m. at the Place of Remembrance, located in front of the Hall of Languages. Remembrance and Lockerbie Scholars

The Remembrance Scholarships are funded through an endowment supported by gifts from alumni, friends, parents and corporations. Applicants for the $5,000 scholarship are asked to highlight their academic achievements, creative pursuits, leadership activities and community service. They also wrote essays and participated in interviews with members of the evaluation committee.

The Remembrance Scholars are joined on campus this week by the . This year鈥檚 scholars are 10 students from Lockerbie Academy who were chosen through a competitive process. During their time on campus, the Lockerbie Scholars, accompanied by Lockerbie Academy Head Teacher Brian Asher and Deputy Head Teacher Kerry Currie (a 1996-97 Lockerbie Scholar), are representing the 11 Lockerbie residents who died in the bombing and 2002-03 Lockerbie Scholar Andrew McClune, who died during his scholarship year in Syracuse. The Lockerbie Scholars will also be recognized at Friday鈥檚 convocation.

鈥楲ook Back, Act Forward鈥

This is the 36th year of the Remembrance scholarships, which were established in the year following the tragedy. Since then, 1,280 scholarships have been awarded to Remembrance Scholars and 80 to Lockerbie Scholars.

The motto of the Remembrance Scholars is 鈥淟ook Back, Act Forward,鈥 and each scholar brings knowledge, perspective and lived experience to Remembrance.

For Remembrance Scholar Edward Lu 鈥26, a music composition major in the , that motto encourages him to reflect on what it means to be a contemporary artist.

鈥淚 aim to honor my predecessors and their past contributions to composition while finding ways to push boundaries and envision fresh and exciting ideas,鈥 he says. 鈥淩emembrance has helped shape who I am as an artist and as an individual.鈥

During his time at Syracuse, Remembrance Scholar Rohan Bangalore 鈥26, a policy studies and law, society and policy major in the and , has worked with the Special Olympics basketball club.

鈥淕etting to know each athlete鈥攏ot just as a player but as a person鈥攔einforced my belief that everyone brings value when given the opportunity. Their example deepened my commitment to empathy, respect and public service,鈥 says Bangalore. 鈥淎s a Remembrance Scholar, I carry those lessons forward with gratitude. In law, policy or public service, I hope to honor those lost on Pan Am 103 through thoughtful, people-centered work.鈥

Once Remembrance Week has concluded, Remembrance Scholars will continue to be engaged in 鈥淎ct Forward鈥 projects, the results of which will be shared with the University community in the spring.

网爆门 and Lockerbie Academy are renewing and strengthening their longstanding partnership through a reimagined initiative that will bring Lockerbie students to Syracuse for a full academic year. This enhanced program deepens the bond between the two communities, forged in the aftermath of the Pan Am Flight 103 terrorist attack on Dec. 21, 1988, which claimed 270 lives鈥攊ncluding 35 网爆门 students studying abroad in London and Florence.

Beginning in the Fall 2026 semester, two students from Lockerbie Academy will be selected each year to receive the Lockerbie Scholarship. Recipients will be chosen by a joint committee of 网爆门 and Lockerbie Academy representatives, using elevated selection criteria based on rigorous academic standards. The selected students will demonstrate academic excellence and a deep understanding of the Pan Am Flight 103 tragedy, which continues to shape both communities.

鈥淭his new and revitalized partnership with Lockerbie Academy honors the memory of those lost in the terrorist attack, while also supporting the educational aspirations of Lockerbie students,鈥 says Lois Agnew, interim vice chancellor, provost and chief academic officer. 鈥淥ur new approach preserves the program鈥檚 most cherished traditions while ensuring we bring students to campus who are prepared to fully engage with the academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities Syracuse offers.鈥

Brian Asher, headteacher at Lockerbie Academy, says: 鈥溚 has, since the terrible events of Dec. 21, 1988, held a special place in the heart of Lockerbie. We re-forge our bond in honor of all those who were lost that night. We act forward in their memory. I am excited to work with our 网爆门 colleagues on behalf of the Academy as we build on our shared past, towards a shared future.鈥

The University and Lockerbie Academy anticipate the renewed collaboration will continue through at least 2028, aligning with the 40th anniversary of the Lockerbie Scholarship Program and its enduring impact on both communities.

Although there will be no Lockerbie Scholars on campus during the 2025-26 academic year, Syracuse will welcome a group of 10 students and two sponsors from Lockerbie Academy in October 2025 for Remembrance Week.

鈥淭heir visit will both commemorate Remembrance Week and celebrate the strong and ongoing bond between Lockerbie and 网爆门,鈥 Agnew says.

Look Back. Act Forward. The Profound Impact of the Remembrance Scholars Cohort (Podcast)

Julie Friend 鈥92 was a sophomore studying speech communication in the when Pan Am Flight 103 went down over Lockerbie, Scotland, on Dec. 21, 1988. Friend and her roommate, Beth, were sitting in Cosmo鈥檚 Pizza on Marshall Street when the breaking news alert came on television.

The two sought comfort and community at , the spiritual heart of campus, mourning the tragic loss of life with the remaining students, faculty and staff members who hadn鈥檛 departed for winter break.

Friend would eventually become part of the first cohort of and the traditions surrounding Remembrance Week.

鈥淩emembrance Week is such a wonderful way to pay tribute to the students and their families, and to instill the impact of the event on Syracuse as an institution. Syracuse could have decided to quietly give out scholarships and not acknowledge the incident, but I鈥檓 so proud of the institution for going the other way, embracing the people impacted by this tragedy and embracing the impact this had on our campus community. By making this a celebration of the lives lost means their memories will last forever,鈥 says Friend, who represented .

“Look back. Act forward.”

Those words influence how 网爆门’s Remembrance and Lockerbie Scholars honor and celebrate the lives of the people who were killed during the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the bombing, which claimed the lives of 270 people, including 35 Syracuse students who were on their way home following a semester abroad.

Julie Friend ’92

Each October, the University community comes together during Remembrance Week events and activities鈥攑lanned by that year鈥檚 cohort of Remembrance and Lockerbie Scholars鈥攖o memorialize the victims and further educate the campus community about terrorism.

The impact of being a Remembrance Scholar lives on in Friend and her fellow scholars.

Today, as director of global safety and security at Northwestern University, Friend developed a comprehensive, universitywide approach to international risk management, including for the university鈥檚 students who study abroad. She wrote the industry standard on how colleges and universities respond to the death of a student abroad.

鈥淎bsolutely there鈥檚 a tie between my work and my time as a Remembrance Scholar. I think about that whenever I鈥檓 dealing with a student in crisis abroad. Knowing the parents of the Pan Am Flight 103 victims experienced the ultimate tragedy a parent can experience when their student goes to college, I think about these family members too, and what they might be going through. It is important for me to put myself in the shoes of those parents so I can be the best I can at my job,鈥 Friend says.

Luke ’16 and Hannah Rafferty ’16

Hannah (Visnosky) Rafferty 鈥16 and Luke Rafferty 鈥16 firmly believe they never would have met were it not for the Remembrance Scholars program. The encounter had life-changing ramifications for both Hannah, who earned a sport management degree from the , and Luke, who earned a photography degree from the .

Today, the two are happily married and co-run a video production company, Filmiamo Productions, that tells the stories of successful companies, brands and individuals. They鈥檙e also raising their Orange goldendoodle, 鈥淲averly,鈥 named for the street where their Remembrance Scholars meetings took place inside Bird Library.

鈥淲hen terrorists perform acts of terror, their goal is to instill fear and terrorize a community. The students that we represent didn’t get their chance at love, they didn’t get their chance at having an adulthood. While the terrorists were trying to harm and hurt people, Syracuse, in creating the Remembrance program, created something good out of this terrible situation. This allows us to talk about the victims of Pan Am 103 and honor their lives through us telling our story of how we met,鈥 says Hannah, who represented .

鈥淧eople of a certain generation remember Pan Am 103, but people of the newer generation don鈥檛 really know what happened that day. We get to provide that context and tell them that story to make sure those 35 网爆门 students are always remembered and never forgotten. The student I represented [] wanted to be a photojournalist telling the types of stories Hannah and I do with our video production company. She also describes how powerful and emotional it was when the University marked the 30-year anniversary of the incident in 2018.

Hannah and Luke share how being Remembrance Scholars helped their Orange love story blossom. They also discuss the personal significance of both the Place of Remembrance鈥攚here each year the Syracuse community gathers for a candlelight vigil and rose-laying ceremony鈥攁nd the Remembrance Wall鈥攚hich features the names of the 35 Syracuse students who died.

Remembrance Week Lecture on Trauma, Identity, Community and the 1988 Lockerbie Bombing

网爆门 Libraries鈥 Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archives, part of the Special Collections Research Center, is sponsoring a public lecture on Friday, Oct. 21, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons in Bird Library, Room 114. The lecture, 鈥淚t was known as the place where nothing ever happens. But it did. It did: trauma, identity, community and the 1988 Lockerbie bombing,鈥 is part of the University鈥檚 Remembrance Week 2022 programming.

The lecture will feature Dr. Andy Clark of Newcastle University and Dr. Colin Atkinson of the University of the West of Scotland. They will discuss their recent criminological oral history research with first responders to the Lockerbie disaster site. Drawing upon an attentiveness to sensory experiences and the role of the senses in memory, they discuss three themes that emerged through their research interviews: the ways in which the event, and the memories of disaster scene, are narrated by responders through the lens of trauma and emotional response; the role of identity鈥攑articularly professional identity鈥攊n the narratives of responders; and the role of community in capturing the collective belonging of first-responders who were brought together as a result of the Lockerbie bombing. Themes discussed will resonate with other communities who have suffered through disasters.

This year marks the 34th anniversary of the bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on Dec. 21, 1988. Each year, the University鈥檚 Remembrance Week honors the 270 people, including 35 students studying abroad through the University, who lost their lives in the tragedy. The Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archives in the Libraries鈥 Special Collections Research Center collects, preserves, and provides access to materials that document the bombing and its aftermath, and provides a place to personalize and honor the 270 victims, their families, and communities.
