Expert Tips to Make Your New Year鈥檚 Resolution Stick
As New Year鈥檚 Eve approaches, millions of Americans will vow to lose weight, exercise more or quit smoking. While admirable, most will fail. Research shows resolutions often collapse within weeks. Lasting change is difficult, but there are proven methods that all start with one thing: a baby step.
Tracey Musarra Marchese, a professor of practice in social work in the School of Education, says the problem often starts with unrealistic expectations.
鈥淧eople set resolutions that are too lofty. Instead of saying, 鈥業 want to lose 30 pounds,鈥 think about the first step,” Marchese says. “That鈥檚 the goal to set.鈥
Breaking big resolutions into smaller, bite sized pieces is key. This partial goals strategy builds momentum and confidence and ultimately, success.
鈥淲hen you see successes along the way, it keeps you motivated,鈥 she says. 鈥淚f you try to overhaul your life overnight, you鈥檙e setting yourself up for failure.鈥
Find Your Support
Support systems matter too. Marchese points to research that shows accountability dramatically improves success rates.
鈥淲hen someone knows your goal, you have encouragement and accountability,” Marchese says. “It鈥檚 not about punishment, it鈥檚 about having someone to check in with.鈥
But along with success more often with New Year鈥檚 resolutions comes failure. That鈥檚 why Marchese says self-compassion is important too. In other words, give yourself a break.
鈥淚f you鈥檙e a perfectionist, resolutions can backfire,鈥 Marchese says. 鈥淢issing a workout doesn鈥檛 mean you鈥檝e failed. Give yourself grace and adjust. Every day is a new opportunity.鈥
Reframe Your Goals
Ultimately, for success in achieving your New Year鈥檚 resolution, reframing goals as positive actions rather than restrictions is crucial.
鈥淚nstead of focusing on quitting smoking, think about what you鈥檒l add to your life, like a new hobby or stress-relief activity,” Marchese says. “Moving toward something is more motivating than removing something.”
Her bottom line: Don鈥檛 wait for Jan. 1 to make changes.
鈥淓very day is a new chance,鈥 Tracy says. 鈥淪tart small, build habits, and celebrate progress. That鈥檚 how real change happens.鈥
